J.D. Thompson
J.D. Thompson is one of Washington's premiere skiers. He's known for winning the Sick Bird award in Big Mountain competitions. This photo captures the sick bird in action. He was also winner of the first annual Shane McConkey Invitational held at Crystal Mountain.
J.D. has joined the Northwest Freeride coaching staff to mold fledgling birds. He hails from a family of native Washington skiers who all share a love for freeriding.
Andy DeVore
Growing up in southern Wisconsin, Andy spent his time skiing on landfills and other man-made ski resorts. Without the option of powder skiing and backcountry terrain, he competed in area mogul, big air, and slopestyle events.
In 2005 he moved to Washington to ski the Cascades to focus on big mountain skiing with the goal of incorporating aspects of newschool freestyle skiing.
Since moving to Washington, Andy has competed in big mountain and big air events as well as documenting his progression through photography and video. Andy received 3 nominations for Sick Bird at Crystal Mountain's Silver King Freeride.
Andy spends his summers backpacking and ski mountaineering in the Cascades.
Josh Wirta
Josh hails from Greenwater, WA. He has been flying under the radar for the last several years. But now that's he throwing down double corks there's no more flying low when you fly that high. He won the New School Trick award in '09 and '10 at Snoqualmie's Pretzel and Doughnut competition. He is also reigning champ at Steven's Big Air Fiesta. Enjoy this clip and be inspired. He has skied more vertical feet by the age of 5 (1.9 million logged for one season) than most people will ski in a lifetime.
Josh takes his new school approach with him deep into the backcountry since that is where he dialed in most of his tricks.
COREY NUGENT
Corey hails from West Seattle. He was part of the first generation of riders who went through Northwest Freeride Programs. He had several podium appearances sking in the IFSA Junior series, including a first place in the Crystal Mountain Triple Crown. Now he has his sights set on competing at the world level of big mountain freeriding through the World Freeride Tour. We're proud to have Corey coaching for us to elevate our next generation of freeriders. He is currently sponsored by Nordica and Giro.
